You have to be absolutely obsessed with basketball if you want to make it in the NBA.
The work never stops, not even after you’ve already tasted glory.
If anything, those who won an NBA championship know just how difficult it is to get back to the mountaintop, as everybody else in the league will be aiming for your crown.
That’s the case with Joe Mazzulla.
Recently, Jayson Tatum revealed that the Boston Celtics coach was already drawing things up for next season right after getting a contract extension, which is why he told him to relax and enjoy winning a championship (via Adam Himmelsbach & Legion Hoops).
Jayson Tatum after signing his extension:
“Joe [Mazzulla] was already trying to draw up s*** for next season. I was like, ‘Joe, f*** that. We just won the championship.’”

Mazzulla is a great tactician, and while his timeout management and ability to make in-game adjustments were highly questioned during his first year on the job, he made significant strides in the following campaign.
He hasn’t been around for long, and he knows just how much hard work it takes to become a marquee name in the Association.
Also, professional sports are never about what you’ve already accomplished as much as they are about what you can do next.
This is a short-memory league and everybody gets a clean slate at the beginning of the season.
So, as much as his relationship with Brad Stevens could keep him safe and as much as his players love him, he knows how quickly things can change in this league, and he’s not going to take any chances.
