Despite questions and sky-high expectations, Joe Mazzulla was able to lead his Boston Celtics to another championship earlier this week.
After several tumultuous years for the Celtics, they earned their 18th Finals win under Mazzulla’s guidance.
When calling into SiriusXM NBA Radio, former Celtics star M.L. Carr had incredibly high praise for Mazzulla and the work he has done for Boston.
“Joe Mazzulla, in this short period of time, will go down I think as one of the top three or four coaches of all time in Celtics history,” Carr said.

It’s been a tough road for Mazzulla and this championship victory is a massive moment for him, his career, and his future.
He used to be an assistant coach for the team but was thrust into the big job when Ime Udoka was suspended and then later fired by Boston’s front office.
When he was promoted, countless people wondered if he was too inexperienced to lead the Celtics.
Those questions grew louder last postseason as the Celtics ultimately fell short of their goals and were taken down in the Eastern Conference Finals.
With all their talent, big things were wanted from Boston this year and Mazzulla had his work cut out for him.
He coached excellently all year long, readjusting, tweaking his approach, and getting the most out of his players and the new additions on the roster.
That led the team all the way to the NBA Finals.
There is no such thing as a perfect season but the Celtics had an incredible one in 2023–24, partly thanks to the brilliant work of Mazzulla.
Carr and many others think he is earning his spot in Celtics history because of that.
