Even though the Boston Celtics are the reigning NBA champions, they’re reportedly up for sale.

Boston Basketball Partners L.L.C., the group that currently owns a majority share of the team, announced a few weeks ago that it would be selling its shares of the team, which presents a unique opportunity for an individual or group to take over one of the most storied teams in sports history.

Joe Lacob, the majority owner of the Golden State Warriors, was asked if he would have interest in purchasing the Celtics, and he said no.

“No chance,” Lacob revealed on “The Athletic NBA Show” to David Aldridge and Marcus Thompson. “No chance, sorry. That ship sailed a long time ago — a long, long time ago.”

Lacob is a native of New Bedford, Mass., which is just minutes away from Boston, and he grew up a Celtics fan back when Bill Russell and John Havlicek were leading them to championships in bunches.

But he moved to Orange County, Calif. in time for high school, and given his new hometown’s proximity to Los Angeles, he became a fan of the Celtics’ hated rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lacob was actually a part-owner of the Celtics beginning in 2006, but in 2010, a group of investors he led purchased the Warriors, and on his watch, they went from long-time laughingstocks to a dynasty that won four world titles.

That dynasty appears to be over, but the Warriors are hoping to pull off a major trade in order to give Stephen Curry the help he needs to take them far in the playoffs while he’s still an elite player.

The Celtics, meanwhile, have a young team that many feel has dynastic potential of its own.
