The Boston Celtics are the NBA champions, and given the relative youth of much of their starting lineup, some people have been talking about them becoming a dynasty in the years to come.
While they have an extremely good squad, it will be very difficult for them to win two or three more world titles in the years to come, and one reason why is the reality of finances.
The NBA’s salary cap is even more restrictive than it already was, and Boston will have to pay all of their players, not to mention strengthen their bench.
But on Monday, they took a step toward continued success when they gave Jayson Tatum a five-year extension that will pay him a mind-boggling $314 million, per Shams Charania.

Tatum is considered the Celtics’ best player, and he averaged 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists a game this past regular season.
However, in what is becoming a tradition, he didn’t play well on the big stage — he put up 22.2 points a game on just 38.8 percent field-goal shooting and 26.3 percent from 3-point range in the NBA Finals, enabling teammate Jaylen Brown to win series MVP honors.
Therefore, some think Tatum’s new extension is an overpay.

Some are wondering how the Celtics are even able to afford to give Tatum this kind of money after recently giving Brown and guard Jrue Holiday big extensions of their own.

Derrick White, the Celtics’ do-everything starting shooting guard, has one season left on his contract, so he will require an extension of his own soon.
Teams across the NBA are starting to see the consequences of the new, ultra-restrictive salary cap, and perhaps the Celtics will feel those consequences not too long from now.
But for now, their two stars have been locked up for years to come.
